Taraba Approves ₦2.5 Billion for Poverty Relief, Youth Empowerment
JALINGO, Taraba State — October 24, 2026
The Taraba State Government has announced ₦2.5 billion in intervention funding for poverty relief, youth empowerment and the rehabilitation of communities affected by communal crises.
Governor Agbu Kefas announced the package during his statewide broadcast marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1, according to Vanguard.
The package includes ₦500 million for the TARABA CARES Social Investment and Poverty Relief Programme, which is scheduled to run from October 2026 to March 2027.
The programme is intended to support vulnerable residents, including low-income households, widows, persons with disabilities and older people.
Another ₦1 billion has been earmarked for the Taraba State Youth Development Agency to support vocational skills acquisition and enterprise development. The remaining ₦1 billion is intended to provide relief and support livelihood recovery in communities affected by communal crises, including parts of Karim Lamido Local Government Area.
According to the governor, the interventions are intended to cushion the effects of economic hardship, create opportunities for young people and assist communities recovering from crises.
The announcement comes at a time when access to financial assistance, vocational training and livelihood opportunities remains important for households struggling to meet basic needs.
However, the approval of funding does not by itself confirm that beneficiaries have received assistance. Information on application procedures, eligibility requirements, selection criteria and payment schedules will be important in determining how residents can access the programmes.
The government will also need to demonstrate how the funds are allocated and monitored to ensure that intended beneficiaries receive the support.
For residents, the central question is whether the intervention will translate into practical assistance, employment opportunities and livelihood recovery. Transparent beneficiary selection and public reporting on expenditure will be important in assessing the programme’s impact.
Further updates from the implementing agencies are needed to establish when applications will open, how beneficiaries will be selected and when support will begin reaching eligible residents.
